It appears Nikon is doing away with the rubber on the zoom rings for it's new lenses, and using machined aluminum instead. I'm not sure if I like this design change for the sake of fashion, but I'm trying to keep an open mind about it, until I try it anyway.

The fact that it is silver or that it has that structure in the image does not say that it must be made of aluminum. Though, if it is made of metal it might be nice during the summer but unless it is rubberized it is not very convenient during the cold winters on some part of the world and when it gets wet it gets slippery as well, so that is also a disadvantage. I never had a full metal lens, all my lenses have always had rubberized rings, but all my cameras except one in my life were made of metal and they can get pretty cold to hold a full day when it is cold outdoors.
