Edge Sharpness
In reply to BRUCEK56, Jan 21, 2013

They said edge sharpness is BEST between f8-f16.

It sounds like you have a nicely optimized 24-105 back from Canon. Congrats.

I too had a 24-105 which I benchmarked against my 24-70 f/2.8 II when I received it. Center and edge sharpness were no where near the 24-70 II on my copy of the 24-105, and I didn't expect it to be. Edge sharpness at 24mm was particularly weak on my copy of the 24-105.

My experience with the 24-70 f/4 IS puts center sharpness basically on par with the 24-70 f/2.8 II, and edge sharpness generally just slightly behind. I tested at f/4, f/8, and f/16, at 24mm, 50mm, and 70mm. Contrast and color were similar as well, an area I never thought my 24-105 was a strong lens.

Based on this, I would expect overall sharpness (center and edge) of the 'average' 24-105 to be a step or two behind the 'average' 24-70 f/4 IS, as well as color and contrast.

The more I shoot with the 24-70 f/4, the more I like it.
