nikon 20mm 2.8 (or 3.5) AI-S vs 16-35 4

Does anyone here have both the 16-35 and some variant of the 20mm AI-s prime, either the 2.8, 3.5, or 4?  Im interested in if the prime ever gets in the same ballpark in the sharpness department as the zoom?  The tests i have read suggest that they are pretty sharp, but some of the photos ive seen look kinda soft.  Im trying to figure out if i want a huge zoom if i can get something that is tiny and comparable IQ at normal landscape apertures.  Every other wide angle zoom ive ever had kinda got used as a giant prime on the widest focal length.  im hoping i can save a lot of size, weight, and cost.
