Testing the 70-200/F4 on a D800

I have read a few tests on this lens and compared to the 70-200/F2.8 I read different results.One saying that the F4 is much sharper and the other saying the F2.8 is sharper.

I don't care about VR, don't care about video and don't care for 2.8. even Bokeh is not that interesting for the majority of shots I do. All I want is the best lens to use on a tripod. If the the 2 lenses perform equally good in sharpness I will ditch the 2.8.

The thing I have noticed is that correcting distortion has very little impact on sharpness (on both lenses)

I decided to give it a go myself I have tried a few times and get different results on every go.. which off course means user error.

My big question is : will a close subject (3 to 4 meters) yield different results compared to an object at 50 meters? In other words does it matter what I focus on or should I get similar results at different distances?

How far are objects in the so called "controlled environments"?

Here are some reviews I've read. With good review I mean better than the F2.8 with Bad review I mean worse than the 2.8. I have already gathered that it's fantastic lens so bad does not mean a bad lens but only compared to the F2.8 it performs less.

I don't know how trustworthy this source is,. but from the results I'd like it to be :-).
