Technology exists in CDAF mode certainly, in PDAF they already tried it on a t3i its called A-DEP and it was utterly stupid and they tossed it out by the time the t4i came out (or maybe its technology is still in some of the auto or scene modes...).  Doubt it did face recognition in PDAF however...although technically the t4i would be best suited to utilize its live-view + onsensor PDAF.

It's amazing that Sony doesn't implement this with their EVF camera's and pellicle mirror.  They have focus peaking in MF mode, but IMO they can do more with EVF/liveview type shooting.  If you are going to rob the sensor of light you need to throw in a lot more features to make it worth it IMO.
