Nikon D3100 upgrade lens

I own a Nikon D3100 and would like to change my lens from the Nikor 18-55mm. A lens that can help me take better pictures at night and maybe one which a wide-angle too?
The current lens is crap at night and the Canon Ixus compact camera takes far better picture than my Nikon which I hate.
I am a beginner so any help to learn would be appreciated
