I am in the process of setting up a small studio at home and would like to know what most consider a good lens for portraits. I have the Nikon 50mm 1.8, Nikon 18-55mm (kit lens)... and was considering the Nikon 16-85mm VR as I have heard its super sharp (and quite reasonable second hand).
Any suggestions welcomed.
The 16-85 does have some advantage over the 18-55 kit lens. For your use, you should compare it with the 18-105 kit lens.
You may find any of these lens too slow at 85 or 105. Check out the 85 1.8, 105 2.8 macro, Tamron 90 macro, etc. You seem to need something in the 85-105+ range. I'd be tempted to try the new 70-200 F4 VR3.
