That issue can't be addressed by remotely checking what's in and what's out in the shooting environment. I tell you this because I perfectly know what's going on.

You should get a fast lens, try by yourself and in case post your solution.

After 8 months of D800e usage (my serial is 450, first batch, no left focus point issue), I concluded that there is no solution. The D800's pdaf sensor is simply not enough precise for 36 megapixels and we have to live with that.

Easy proof: downsample any D800 file to 12 megapixels and everything is in focus.

My solution: open above f2.8 in "emergency", knowing that focus is erratic.
