Basically, the lower Foveon MP rating (not the X3) is equivalent to the MP rating of a mono sensor.

The MP rating of Bayer cameras, while technically correct, doesn't tell you how the resolution will compare to a mono sensor as there are more variables to confound things and different nominal pixel counts will show somewhat different results.

But we've known all this since 2002...

The measured resolution on the other hand is not the simple answer it used to be in film days either, because aliasing comes into play.  Strictly speaking, you should cut off your resolution measurement at the first sign of any aliasing (as results beyond this are suspect). Where that occurs is a bit subjective and if done conservatively, we would be downgrading all these cameras quite a bit...
