Lens Selection for D800 Landscape Photography
4 months ago

Looking to move to a refurb D800 from my 5Dm2. I'm mostly shooting landscapes but also some general walkaround street stuff up here in Alaska. Right now I use the 17-40L, 50 1.4 and 24-105L. I'm not necessarily attached to those focal lengths, though I do appreciate the 24-105 for walkaround stuff or where inclement weather isn't so good for switching lenses. Inclement weather is always happening up here, thus my attachment to zooms. However,  the 24-120 doesn't seem like as good of a lens though for the money so I'm less inclined to go there.  I've also been meaning to pick up a 70-200, though I was waiting for the switch to do it.

I'm also don't have craploads of cash, which are scaring me away from lenses like the 24-70 and 14-24, as well as MF zeiss, etc. though it is probably worth it.

A few ideas:

-Nikkor 16-35 (I want the ability to use my LEE filters)

-50 1.8G

-70-200 f/4 VR

OR

-Tokina 16-28 f/2.8 (f/2.8 would be nice for northern lights photography)

-24-70 (nikkor or tamron) Use this for most of my LEE filter work, 24mm is plenty wide for a lot of situations.

-Nikkor 70-200 f/4

Picking up a fast 50 at some point.

OR something I'm not considering!

Thanks for any advice.
