I've done a lot of AF fine tuning using the 45 degree sheet method, results were frustrating, and inconsistent.

Couple of notes from what I have learned:

1. flat surface with contrast is most reliable, 45 degree stuff is not.

2. Use plenty of lighting and a tripod to reduce variables

3. Defocus and refocus a few cycles and then shutter

4. For a 70mm, use about 7' For 50mm use 5' for 200mm use 20'

5. Turn off the VR

6. Use the short and log end of a zoom

7. have good light so that 200 ISO or less and 1/250 or faster on the 24-70

Use a lensalign if you can, and that uses the 45 degree piece to measure, not to focus on.
