There is one exception I'm aware of. If you copy images from the camera to an iOS device (e.g., iPhone, iPad) those images will be copied to your PhotoStream and to the PhotoStream folder on your other devices including a PC. You don't need PlayMemories on the PC. Doesn't seem to copy Sweep Panorama images though.
