My 550D was overexposing pretty consistently, and the center of the spot metering was off. Needed to be sent to Canon for fixing (under warranty), now it's ok. see http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/39266860

I tend to not use evaluate metering anymore, since you don't know what Canon's algorithm is thinking, I just go with average metering, like in the good old films days. If necessary (e.g, blown white skies, or something bright in front of dark background), I use EC.
