thanks Kanano. I read the site and it was very helpful. I have pretty much decided that the 300mm F4 with the 1.4X is better than the 70-200 with the 2X. Now I'm just wondering about renting the 300 mm f2.8 lens for a week in Costa Rica. Either that or the 300mm f4. I know that the 2.8 version is much better but I'm not sure I can handle its weight.

Hi Marsha, saw your other post as well to decide between the two. Check this site out - he favours the 300 f4 and 1.4 tc as well

Cheers

Depends what you mean by much better.

The 300 f2.8 is slightly sharper than the 300 f4 but it is close.

It has VR

It is twice as bright

It handles all tele convertors better.

But it is 3x the weight

Really needs a monopod

And costs a shedload of money.

Having said that I prefer it to the 300 f4 for what I do.

Renting would be a good idea.
