Interesting.

There was a recent thread on POTN (and a thread on Dpreview alerting all to this) about a few guys in the UK who had counterfeit stickers on their new 5DIIIs bought from a large Hong Kong based internet ordering company.  It seemed that a wholesale supplier to this company had been rebadging serial numbers to attempt to disguise to Canon who had been selling to the grey marketeers. Pretty silly really, as the original serial numbers were still imprinted in the firmware and available from the EXIF.

The only reason for this mob doing this would be to avoid Canon tracking the serial number.  If Canon is trying to suppress the grey market, it is surprising that they do not keep an electronic record of serial numbers and which batch was shipped to which market.

Or maybe that wholesaler in Hong Kong was even dumber than was apparent.
