I got the 18mm and the 35mm. Tried out the zoom in a shop and loved the build quality but was shocked by it's AF speed. Maybe it was because of the dim light but it felt slower than the 35mm which is a lot slower than the 18mm.
But most people say the zoom is focusing very fast. For those who have both: Does it focus faster than the 35mm?
I have the zoom and the 35. In my experience the zoom focuses much faster and more accurately. I rarely have any focusing problems with the zoom.
The 35 on the other hand drives me crazy - it keeps failing me when I need it most, in low light. Probably it's part user error, but focus keeps hunting in low light. Not all users seem to have as big problems with the 35, though, and on the other hand some are not as happy with the zoom's focusing as I am. I don't know if different ways of use are the reason to this or if there are some minor variations in the units that explain the differences.
I love the picture quality of the 35, but it's not my favorite focal length. If firmware doesn't improve AF and if I can't learn to focus it better I'm tempted to sell it when the 23 f1.4 is released, since the 23 feels more natural for my use.
