In case anyone is curious in the future, Epson called me to follow-up about my support request.  It seems like they do care that I had a bad support experience, even though it is just with a SOHO product that only cost ~$300.

You can't buy an extended warranty once your printer is more than 6 months old.  The person who called me back is going to check and see if they can make an exception for me, or just give me the longer warranty, and call me back next week.

Also, Epson said I can call them in the future if I buy another Epson printer, and get some free inks for being a repeat customer.  I didn't know about that.  She probably mentioned it because I told her if my WP-4540 broke out-of-warranty I would just buy another one anyway.  It is a good printer for my SOHO use.  The print quality is nothing like my 3880 of course!
