What do you mean by effectively? All of the shots posted in this thread are effective, you can tell that they are birds. Do you want more than being able to tell it's a bird? Do you want in flight shots of falcons at sunset?

All of this boils down to your expectations. There is a reason that people spend 13K on a birding lens and another 5K on a body, 1K tripods, flash setups etc. They want top quality.

For serious birding, all of the micro 4.3 lenses are too slow. You can't extend the reach with teleconverters and c-af tracking is sub par. But if your expectations are more modest, any lens will do. You just need to be where the birds are...
