First dslr Purchase - Unique Circumstances
4 months ago

I am looking to purchase my first dslr and would like some advice on which you believe would be a good option given my circumstances.

The camera will serve dual purposes, typical family type shooting and for school events.  My wife works at a high school so I will be taking photos of events and sports to put in the school newsletters and paper.  This isn't a paying gig so I don't need professional gear and I won't be blowing anything up larger than 8.5"x11"  The one thing that is critical to me is the grip and ergonomics.  I have broken my hand in the past and I've noticed that smaller grips cause numbness after only minutes of use.  I've read the reviews and handled what I could in the stores to get a hands on feel and here are my thoughts so far.

On paper I really like the Nikon cameras, specifically the d7000 and d600.  The problem is the d7000 grip causes issues with my hand.  The d600 has a slightly larger grip and feels better but I think for my use a FF camera is overkill and the price is significantly more albeit reasonable for FF.  On the Canon side the offerings seem to be outgunned on paper but feel so much better in my hand.  The 7d feels about perfect and the 60d not far behind.  I have no preference between Nikon/Canon but didn't care for the Sony and can't get my hands on a Pentax.

My budget is around $2000 for camera and glass, I plan on getting quality glass, probably a fast prime and a zoom for now.  I hope that this will become a more serious hobby so I will be able to invest in more equipment but for now I just need to cover the basics.

Right now I'm tossing around the 7d/60d because I think that if it isn't comfortable I just won't use it regardless of image quality.  The ergonomics on both are great, the 7d has a faster burst for sporting events but the 60d has the swivel screen for the off angle shots and is cheaper.  I know these models are a couple years old and I keep hearing that a new camera is around the corner.  I don't need to be shooting tomorrow but I would like to get some time with the camera before summer comes around.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Troy
