Why would you need a DSLR for Macro shot of chips? Your subjects are not running anywhere, and you can set up any lighting you need. The sensors in DSLRs are too big, you need high magnification to fill the whole big sensors.
Better solution would be to find a compact with good sharp lens for macro, even if rather old sensor (which is still going to be perfect at base ISO). Olympus XZ-1 for example. Little on-table tripod and proper lighting which would not leave many unwanted shadows - light tent or something.
