You But I thought you didn't own or use a DSLR and flash yet... how can you be 'well aware' of something you haven't used? Confusing...

You are on here asking basic question as if you don't know anything - but you do?

I will definitely add that to my toolkit and use where appropriate.

Like the situations you have been mentioning.

There are some photos that absolutely require flash, but there are also photos in that gray area where flash would make it easy and but a skilled photographer with the right equipment can get it done without flash.

Hahaha... totally funny, and totally false! You paint the use of flash as some sort of negative or as a crutch that a 'skilled photographer' wouldn't - or shouldn't - use. You are far, far off the mark.

Flash can be used in all situations - low light, no light, bright light, indoors, outdoors... it's just a tool and the 'skilled photographer' will use whatever tools to get whatever look they are trying to create.

My inquiry here is about getting the right equipment to do the latter in those situations where it is possible to do without flash.

Right, well... go get a DSLR first, then try it, then report back with your successes... You may find that flash isn't the crutch you make it out to be. It's ok, a lot of beginners read the online mantra of not using flash and believe it - they just don't know that this advice usually comes from some self proclaimed 'expert' with poor or no knowledge of flash use.
