I don't care about video. Should I?

I don't feel forced to learn how to shoot video just because it's there on the camera. There are other features that I ignore quite happily (like the "scene modes" and effects).

I'm curious about it, because it seems such a big part of Sony's thinking about what a DSLT-type camera ought to do. And not just Sony: As I noted, the other brands all do video now, too.

So I want to know why? Who's using the video features on these cameras? What are they doing with it? And where can I start learning more about it myself? I may not be asking my questions well, but I'm trying to ask a real question. I don't want to go to a local college and take a course in video production. I don't want to buy a big book on how to shoot a movie. What I want is something like an article titled, "Getting started with the video features on your high-end digital camera: A guide to short movies for the still photographer." I Googled that. Didn't find what I was looking for...
