N6: PZ1650 vs SEL3518
Jan 18, 2013

Was at a bar tonight in fairly dim conditions. Granted for alot of shots the 35 was better, but honestly unless you are constantly controlling it the camera, in P mode always defaults to ISO 3200. Whether the aperture is at 1.8 or 5.6. It was somewhat annoying to be honest. Had to keep stepping in to adjust controls. I think the algorithms or what not try to get the shutter speed to 1/60 regardless without compensating for OSS or obviously for whats in the scene. Therefore if switching between static and moving subjects the camera will stick to a default setting. Luckily with the 6 its easier to control such things.

Anyways without getting into shooting moving subjects I just wanted to do a quick compare at 35mm of a static subject in a bar. I intentionally picked 2.0 on the 35 to add a little DOF and took both shots hand held to show the difference they can do in an environment like this.

Of note: The 1650 more than held its own at 35mm at 3200 iso. The camera does an excellent job and most of the pictures are almost indistinguishable based upon the automated settings the camera picks in a bar/restaurant situation.

Also this isn't scientific. The WB isn't even proper but it did choose diff white balances based on the lenses and their speed. Shots were in raw, then exported to dp via LR4.3 w/o correction or adjustment.

Tried using optimal lens/iso/shutter speeds to get the dartboard in focus.

Anyways. Don't have any definitive conclusions. The 6/Nex line is/are such a capable camera that even with the lack of a fast lens it can still compensate fairly well with its iso in anything thats not meant for large prints. The 1650 does allow more room to maneuver in environments like this so its an entirely capable camera in these situations with the kit, as long as you can deal with a little noise.

She was angry and refused to pose.
