Just get a nifty fifty and some cheap extension tubes.

Really, what more do you need for macro of insects?

Tediolph.

Well, one thing I found recently is that the ability to handhold the camera at arms length, framing with the LCD, and using the touchscreen "tap for focus and shoot" works really well.

Manual focus is great, if you can hunch around the camera and the subject isn't flighty.

Holding a 1:1 macro shot at arm's lenght!?

Are you kidding?

I have never taken that sort of a macro shot where the camera wasn't: a) on a tripod or some sort of support; or b) I had the camera or lens braced against something.

Lower magnification macro hand held shots yes, but not 1:1 and definately not at "arms lenght".

Is this some sort of hypothetical thought experiment or have you really dont this?

I doubt it was 1:1. I didn't say it was so thanks for making that up. It was more like 1:3 or 1:4.

Here you go.

I didn't quite nail it. There's a bit of motion blur there. I only got a chance for one shot though.
