I agree on all counts. Although my NEC 27" monitor is over 2 years old, it never seems to go out of calibration! (MultiSync LCD2690WUXi2) I agree that it matches the quality of the Eizo - for a lot less money. I print my own 16" x 24" prints almost weekly and they are sooooo very close to what I see on the monitor. (Over 100% aRGB gamut - awesome)

First, you want an IPS panel - forget TN and VN panels.

Second, you want a matte display, not glossy (this generally isn't an issue except for Apple monitors).

LED backlighting is bad, sometimes they cannot go dim enough for proper brightness calibration, and their color temperatures are often difficult (or impossible) to calibrate depending on your colorimeter.

My personal recommendation is NEC. You get everything from the ultra expensive Eizo monitors but for slightly less money. The important thing is they use hardware calibration. The calibration is actually stored in the monitor via 14 bit look up tables, so it's not being altered by your video card via software calibration (which is less than ideal). This is much preferred. Additionally, it allows you to switch between calibrated profiles (sRGB, ARGB, Full Bright, etc.) depending on your intended use with the press of a button. The NEC monitors also have a built in feature for maintaining a perfectly even backlight at all times - Dell, for example, is known for uneven backlighting. They also have a built in feature for changing brightness to match ambient lighting if for some reason it changes often.

I used to use Dell IPS monitors, and now that I've used a true professional grade monitor, I'll never go back. There is a much larger difference that I had ever thought.

With the NEC, you don't need to buy their colorimeter. You just need the Spectraview software and a X-Rite Eye One LT colorimeter (that is the same one NEC rebrands for their use). I use that combination and it's absolutely excellent.

This is an amazing deal right now even at $899, and was briefly $799 around Christmas:

Good luck with your choice. I highly recommend spending just a little bit more to get a truly excellent monitor - after all, you're going to spend hours and hours looking at it.
