Yes., that makes sense.   The standard 18-55 kit zoom offers little over the two primes.   Something with more range would be my choice, like the 18-105mm you mention.  Is there an 18-85mm?  That would also be enough range to be useful.   I don't know Nikon dslr lenses so can't make specific recommendations, but I really like what I've been reading about their recent bodies.
