Lightroom: Problem with adjustment brush.

Has anybody experienced this? When I use the adjustment brush in Lightroom 4 and check 'Edge aware' and paint with the brush on a surface to brighten it up, the picture very often gets grainy and shows a lot of flakes in the area. When I uncheck 'Edge aware' this doesn´t happen.
