Pelagic's advice is good, for exactly the reasons he gives.

Lightroom is very straightforward to use and gives good results. It has most of what you need, and very little that you don't need. Once you are used to it, you can either add Elements or plug-ins (from Topaz, onOne, or Nik) depending on your preferences.
