Don't think there is such a thing as a free lunch.

It's not free:

  • Costs $400-$600
  • Only works for mirrorless cameras
  • Does not completely correct for the crop factor
  • Is not perfectly matched to each lens so performance will vary, particularly off-center

there is a lack of information regarding the loss of IQ due to the introduction of additional elements. Specifically increases in chromatic aberrations, distortion, reflectance etc.

Just adding elements does not mean chromatic aberrations, distortion, etc are increased. Otherwise, the optimum lens would be just one or two elements. The additional glass/air surfaces does mean minor additional transmission losses.

Unless they have optical element technology (design + material science) that beats anything that the lens makers have, there has gotta be a catch somewhere.

It's not perfect and some of the catches are listed above.

Considering that FF sensors have a roughly 2 stop advantage in terms of noise, there is still a 1 stop gap too.

u4/3 has a two stop disadvantage - this reduces it to 1 stop. APS-C has a one stop disadvantage which this mostly corrects.
