I have shot with both systems and used pro primes and zooms and flash and been a CPS and NPS member. For telephoto use I would go with Canon, for everything else I would go with Nikon. Nikon has better glass in the wide to normal range with its 14-24mm f2.8 and 24-70mm f2.8 zooms. For people photography the Nikon DC lenses are also special and nothing like them from Canon. Flash exposure accuracy is good with Canon and great with Nikon.

The only advantage with the Canon is that the 5D cameras have been out a lot longer and used for video for several years so there are more third party video rigs for Canon than Nikon cameras at this time.

Overall Nikon gear holds up better over time whereas the Canon gear is going to spend a greater percentage of its life at the Canon repair facilities. Easy to verify by checking the posts by users on the forums.
