If I was in your shoes (a non stabilized Panasonic body) I'd rather look for the 45mm F2.8 macro, which is stabilized. Further, I'm not exactly sure how DOF works at the very close macro distances, but since 45mm is shorter than 60mm, you should get a little more DOF (?) . Also the 45mm cost more if I remember correctly, so I guess that this comes into the equation too, of course.

Think to it what is disturbing you with the 60mm pictures ? Is it what you perceive as some lack of sharpness ? Because it could just be lack of DOF. Smaller compact cameras have an advantage when you want deep DOF, so it may explain why you find the pictures coming from that old TZ compact still superior.

The 45mm is pricey and the reviews seem to favour the Oly.  You are right that my issue is mainly lack of DOF.  And although small sensor cameras do have an advantage, my 35mm on my E620 gives me reasonable DOF.
