They both have specific uses and are both good at what they do.

The best combo for me is a D800 and D3s both are fantastic at what they are designed to do, and one can't replace the other.

That's my kit - I call it "beauty and the beast". Neither replaces the other, rather, they compliment each other. Using both in Africa was a joy.
