The "BEST all around" DX lens may be the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 AF-S. It will cost you about $1300.00 new.

You may also want to consider the Sigma 17-50 2.8, or the Tamron 17-50 2.8 ( $600.00 & $500.00 - new).

Other considerations:

Nikon 24mm f/2.8 AF-D

Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AF-D

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX

Not sure if you want a zoom or if a prime (or couple of primes) would suit your needs. The D200 is a great camera but it's limitation is that it doesn't shoot the cleanest images at higher ISO's and with that in mind you may require a fast lens like the ones above. Of course you could always slap on a kit lens like the Nikon 18-55mm VR but you may need to use a flash in situations with low light...
