What do others `see` in a picture ?

I`ve been taking photos for over 50 years and still I am amazed at what others see in photos. For instance, someone pays me to do portraits of their dogs. I normally do several shots, discard the ones where the pose is badly wrong, out of focus etc. and show the rest for them to choose.

Every now and then the customer will look before I am ready and almost instantly choose the shot or shots that I would have deleted. In other words, they see something in the shot that I don`t.

Same thing applies to pictures of family - friends etc.

What have I not learned in fifty years ?
