Nikon AFs 50 mm D type and Gtype difference

The "D" focuses disappointingly slow on the D90, I know that. It is configured for long and precise manual focus travel, but this means autofocus is slower. Image quality is not a problem. The G type has its own motor, is known to focus faster and the manual focus ring works independently of the autofocus.
