The D2x and D2xs sensors have more in common with the D200 than the D300/D300s.

The D90 and D3 have more in common with the D300/D300s.

Take a look at

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d90/sharpness-comparison.htm

The D300s has higher saturation and lower high-ISO noise than the D2x.

The D90/D300/D3 have similar image characteristics while the D200 is clearly the outlier in his samples there. The D200 and D2x/D2xs are super-similar. (D2x/D2xs sensor is very slightly better than the D200's sensor; seeĀ http://www.naturfotograf.com/D200_rev02.html )

As far as image quality goes, the D300s trumps the D2x/D2xs easily. However I do prefer the D2x body do the D300 since it has the integral vertical grip.
