By chance I was testing my new (three days, haven't even depleted a charge yet) LX7 on a tripod, and happened to discover that while zooming from "24mm" to "90mm", the image shifts to the left and even up and down a bit. Not much, but noticeable.

My old compact, an Ixus 750, does not exhibit the same behaviour, and that is about seven years old and have seen better days.

It isn't really a big problem, but as the shop I bought it from happens to accept returns if the camera is in a state that can be sold as new, I would like to be sure that it hasn't been used/misused and returned before.

You seem to have some experience, so this is probably not the issue, but...

Try it with and without image stabilization active. Is the behavior different?
