I wish marketing teams could get the names right on these. They even use the term "Ring flash" for "ring light" units.
That's a similar design to what Canon calls a macrolite Frank. There is no ring at all. So theres not a lot in there and doesn't need the power unit to fire it. No wonder its so small. As for cost, check out the Canon macrolites mate
I'm usually much more careful not to refer to the Metz macro flash as a ring flash. A ring flash literally contains a flash tube that circles around the ring. The Metz macro flash has two flash tubes 180 degrees apart and is much more like the Nikon R1C1 macro flash system, with which I also have a lot of experience. Usually, I just call the Metz macro flash just that: the Metz macro flash. The Metz macro flash is only in the shape of a ring, and screws onto the end of your lens. It allows you to get even illumination of subjects at 1:1 image magnification, and even beyond. But I've never used it off-camera, as you do with your ring flash. Seems as if that would be defeating its purpose.
