The plastic film is the direction-sensitive component

The glass element in my circular polarizer fell out of the mounting ring. A few drops of superglue will fix it in place, but it fits snugly either way.

So is the glass element directional?

The clear glass is just there to provide physical support for the plastic film.

If it's repairable with only glue, it might have been originally assembled with only glue instead of retaining rings. Do you think your repair will be any better than the original condition? You might be betting the front element of your lens on the answer.

If this happened to me I'd probably be looking for a replacement that has a better construction to begin with.
