It's called a flash. It's the only solution to getting human skin tones under mercury vapor lights other than shooting at a ridiculously slow shutter speed.
The saddest thing is that the photos often look better than what you see with your eyes. Anyone can see some arenas are lit with ugly greenish lights and people lit by them look like Martians.
Unfortunately, some sports (like gymnastics!) don't allow flash, so you are stuck with the changing colors.
