Perhaps you are looking at this backwards. Instead of making the lens shorter, make the camera smaller.
Slap that 400mm via an E-mount adapter on to a tiny NEX-5N (which can be had for cheap) and you'll get way more looks than when the 400mm is more normally mounted on a far more serious looking black Nikon DSLR.
For additional comic effect, purchase the NEX-5N in white.
