What you are forgetting is that what is valid for one photographer isn't necessarily valid for another. The author of the test made a careful assertion of what his needs were : aka he needs some DOF rather than blurred backgrounds. Of course, if you are mainly shooting portraits indoors, then your reasoning will be different and you may justify the buy of a Nikon D800 or D600.

As for always shooting landscapes with a tripod, I'm sure that there are many hobbyists who don't bother to lug a tripod around. Although as soon as you buy a camera like the D800 you may need a tripod in order to take full advantage of its 36 mps sensor and of the great lenses going with it.
