If you want auto focus you need a lens with a built in motor so you need AFS lenses in Nikon form or HSM in Sigma. AFS = silentwave motor, HSM = hypersonic motor. I don't know what the other manufacturers offer.

For 85mm I'd get either the Nikon 85mm f1.8G or the Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM. Either of these is a much better lens than the old 85mm f1.8D anyway, it's not just about retaining AF. My choice was the Sigma. Superb lens.
