I, like the OP, tend to use the CP1 Punch setting with the clarity up one notch. I also tend to generally move the clarity slider up +30-40 in LR 4.
I suppose we just like the bit more punch in the image.
It does appear that all RAW and JPG comparisons are done at the "as shot" ev. Now that may have been turned down a bit.
