And, as no two companies have the same 'default' settings - you can't even compare one RAW processor with another using this method.
It's meaningless, and very misleading.

Rubbish.
Default program setting is designed by manufacture for one specific reason, to make the product as attractive as possible and to sell it as quickly as possible. Download the trial version, test it, and if you like it, buy it. You shouldn’t expect people to master their skills in every product they try if there is no “love at first sight”. When some of us are comparing various products at their “default” settings it means we are picking one to master later.
I would love to learn all raw converters in depth but I don’t have time.

You couldn't be more wrong
Just looking at CaptureOne today - the 'default' settings for sharpening were so low, as to leave the RAW file looking soft and fuzzy
Not much different from no sharpening at all in fact
Then looking at Saturation - flat and dull
You could go on and on through the various settings - there is nothing 'love at first site' about it
Default is only there because they have to start somewhere - how could you have a default setting that applied to a hundred different types of camera RAW file?
If all you do is leave settings at default - you may as well not bother using the software

You completely missed my point. You don't like C1 default settings? good, stay with ACR or if you have time, learn C1 in depth and compare. But even if you set both C1 and ACR to their optimal output it is you who will prefer one over the other based on your criteria and your knowledge of the tool.
There are tons of other raw converters on the market. Do you have time to explore all of them in depth? I don't.
Default setting is just a common denominator for initial test (see Adrian Tung message bellow for test best practices in details) to pick up few for further exploration. C1 and RPP are on my list.

No - first you said that 'default' was a setting designed to sell the product with 'love at first site' reactions.
This is completely wrong
Now you say that 'default is actually 'common denominator' - which again is wrong
Default settings on SilkyPix are different from CaptureOne, and are different from ACR - there's no common denominator there for comparison
I can completely see where an academic argument by Adrian Tung would suggest that it's a repeatable set of settings - but that doesn't prove anything when each software manufacturer has different default settings, and when each RAW file from a different camera and/or manufacturer is completely different in it's requirements for even the most basic post processing.
If you don't have the time to learn the software, then RAW is a waste of time - you may as well take the 'easy button' approach and shoot JPEG.
It not a case of 'liking' default settings - it's an understanding that the default settings do not in any shape or form provide quality post processing for your RAW file.
And that's before you've factored in the end game - the final image format, size, material etc - which again completely alters the way you process the RAW file.
For Web you do one thing - for print another, for magazine another, for poster yet another.
I hope this helps you and inspires you to look in more detail at how to use the RAW processing tools available.
