I noticed the same, solutions are:
1. The difficult route: shoot raw and develop in lightroom or other software with sharpness adjusted around 50. and some noise reduction applied. Also PsKiss has some nice plugin-colour-profiles for the LX5, that makes the colours of the Raw-files beautiful.
or.
2. The easy route: Avoid iA mode and shoot jpeg in either P, A or S modes and when in these modes, adjust the standard film mode with these settings: NR -2, and sharpness +1 or +2, maybe also turn off iResolution, this feature does sharpen some fine edges, but tends sometime to blur fine details like leaves.
Both of these solutions helps a lot.
Also, the lens is much sharper at f. 2.8 and at its sharpest at f 4.0, where it is a really nice lens! I bet at f. 4.0 way sharper than your old camera, if not, you have a lemon. I therefore always try to shoot at these apertures in A-mode, if there is enough light.
Good luck.
