Have you checked the MAH output on your batteries? Typical batteries don't have a high output. I have a Canon 430 EX II and have no issue firing the flash 10 times quickly. It does warn in the manual that after 20 repeated flashes it may take some time to cool down.
What level is the flash firing at? 1:1? Have you tried lowering the output to see if you can still get a decent shot?
