The most obvious use is when lighting conditions are not the normal run of the mill daylight, flash, strip lights or tungsten (the camera manufacturer has these sources well covered) . Sometimes a brick wall, the sky or whatever will reflect a color cast which is really difficult to get rid of by normal white balancing. Color checkers save loads of time fiddling around.
