D300, still worth it?

Look at the first results posted over in the FX forum in which a consumer grade lens was used on the D600. There is one post of a Tamron 70-300 used on a D600 in crop mode @ ISO200. I would say that a D300S using the Nikon 70-300VR (same price as the other combo) would easily deliver a way better result. And even in FX mode the vignetting is pretty bad on the D600+cheap zoom combo.
