page 15 bottomof D4 broschure it clearly shows that face recognition has impact on the whole phase detect and auto area and 3d tracking system....

Unfortunatliy it aoppears you misunderstood the diagram. The only part of PDAF the RGB sensor integrates with, according to the diagram on page 15, is "Phase-detection AF...Auto-area AF/3D-tracking" No where are the other phase-detection AF mode listed. So I guess the other guidance we have was right or the other dynamic areas modes would not have been left off the diagram.

My opinions are my own and not those of DPR or its administration. They carry no 'special' value (except to me and Lacie of course)

No thats wrong its the whole phase detect system you and Thom are reading it the wrong way..

I beg to differ. The more I look at this and the more I read other people's opinions and references in relation to this the more I am convinced it is your reading of the diagram that is incorrect.

I am simply asking you to double check before you continue calling everyone else incorrect.

its biasing the whole phase detect system.... that whole block is the phase detect system

and it has those 2 undergroups especially...

No, it only goes to those two undergroups within the group. Check out the other boxes and see what the logic in using the bold and normal type faces is.

I know from knowledgable people from Nikon that face recognition is part of the scene recognition process and that comes before any of these processes.....I also interpret the block differently !

A quick update... If you make an experiment with your D4 and D800 and put a blank white page

onto your computer monitor and insert a face in one of the corners you will see that with its autofocus system

you can come near with a selcted focus point and without the focus point being on something with contrast it still locks onto a part of the face within reach of the next focus points not more..

with automatic mode it can reach a portrait of a face almost on the full screen....

so in dynamic mode its only a  very low distance that it jumps..... but if it cant lock because of low contrast it does use a different field...
